There are some old-fashioned names that may never make a comeback—we're looking at you, Gertrude and Ethel. But I think Harriet is ready to come back into vogue, nearly 40 years after it left the top 1000.
It's a beautiful name that means ruler, a British version of the French Henriette. But it's its pedigree that could make it a pretty wonderful choice. Two of its most famous bearers are Harriet Tubman, a former slave who ran the Underground Railroad and helped dozens of slaves escape to freedom, and Harriet Beecher Stowe, noted abolitionist and author of Uncle Tom's Cabin, which documented some of the horrors of slavery. And of course, there's Harriet the Spy, if you're into kids lit.
Harriet comes with some cute nicknames—Hattie and Hetty—and yes, even Harry, if you're feeling daring. And I think it pairs beautifully with middle names like Maeve, Juniper, Pearl and Ruby.
